At Karma Coast, we have always placed education at the forefront of what we do. We believe that one of the most important parts of cannabinopathic care is the way it offers its users a sense of autonomy in their health and healing process. Part of this autonomy comes from understanding the science and research behind CBD, how it interacts with the body, the varying methods of using it, and what works best for each person’s individual needs. Along with the best CBD oils, educating our customers is one of the reasons we have won many industry awards and are at the forefront of the UK’s CBD industry.
Exploring the world of CBD for the first time can be overwhelming. With thousands of articles floating around on the internet on CBD benefits, it can be hard to know which sources to trust and where to find the basic information that can best inform your decision when it comes to choosing the right CBD products.
Here, we’re going to debunk some of the language surrounding CBD whilst discussing the importance of sourcing high-quality products and what to look for, alongside choosing the best products for you.
Different types of CBD/cannabis oil products have been shown to have varying levels of effect when it comes to therapeutic benefits.
Although most cannabis-based supplements in the UK are labelled as CBD, those that are considered the best CBD oil products contain many other cannabis-derived compounds, known as phytocannabinoids, such as THC, CBG, terpenes and flavonoids, alongside the namesake cannabidiol (CBD).
When searching through CBD oil brands products, you’re likely to come across labels such as CBD isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum. These labels are an indication of whether the product contains multiple phytocannabinoids or includes CBD as its only cannabis-derived compound. Knowing the difference between these forms of CBD is an important part of deciding which CBD oil product to choose.
Full-spectrum CBD oil products are considered to be the most natural and potent and are fully legal in the UK. In addition to their CBD content, they also benefit from the presence of multiple cannabis-derived compounds, including beneficial cannabinoids like THC, CBN, and CBG, terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, and more. That’s why ninety-five per cent of the Karma Coast collection comes under the full-spectrum CBD oil banner.
There is increasing research suggesting that CBD isn’t the only phytocannabinoid that has therapeutic effects on your endocannabinoid system. In fact, to date, there are over 500 different beneficial compounds including 120 phytocannabinoids that have been identified in the cannabis plant, and scientists are continuing to investigate the unique benefits each of them can have on health.
For instance, the controlled substance for UK consumers tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), most well known for its psychoactive neurological impact and recreational use in marijuana, has been proven to have a multitude of potential health benefits when dosed correctly. Most prominently, THC is hugely beneficial in pain management, especially when used in conjunction with CBD.
Sufficient research indicates that when both CBD and THC are present, CBD counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC, meaning that its therapeutic benefits can be experienced without “the high”. Most full-spectrum CBD products will contain the UK legal amount (a THC content of 0.2%) of THC for this reason.
I hope you’ll take my word for it, that here are two of the best tasting and most effective CBD products on the market. Karma Coast’s CBD oil and vape pen cartridges are as good as you can get and I have the experience and knowledge of this market to be able to make that statement with confidence.
Products labelled CBD Isolate are 99% pure CBD and are generally the most basic, least effective CBD product you can acquire, containing CBD as their only phytocannabinoid/cannabis plant-derived compound. Other CBD UK brands will often use this cheap ingredient, however, you will never find it in any Karma Coast product.
Although available in both natural and synthetic forms, isolate is highly processed and generally the most inferior of any cannabis products available to UK consumers. Crystalline in form, it is most often processed into a powder before being added to carrier oils such as coconut oil/ MCT oil, or hemp seed oil in order to be orally ingested.
Isolate pure CBD products are preferred by some individuals for only a few reasons, namely: they contain no THC and are cheaper in comparison to full or broad-spectrum CBD oil products.
As isolate contains 99,99% CBD, at first glance, it can be considered to be the best option. However, studies suggest that when used in its isolated form, cannabidiol isn’t nearly as effective as when used in partnership with other phytocannabinoids. The absence of other phytocannabinoids and cannabis-derived compounds means the ‘entourage effect’, an important interaction between phytocannabinoids and our endocannabinoid system, doesn’t come into play.
CBD distillate concentrates contain around 80-90% CBD along with other phytocannabinoids, but go through further processing which enables the removal of other organic matter such as THC, terpenes, and flavonoids. The process of distillation can be complex but simply put: heat is used to vaporise the phytocannabinoids from the original full-spectrum oil. The vapour is then cooled down in a distillation cooling system, producing a substance of honey-like consistency, most often used in vape and orally ingestible products.
Broad-spectrum CBD oils are akin to full-spectrum products in the way they contain multiple cannabis-derived compounds. The defining factor between the two is that broad-spectrum products go through further refinement to achieve a zero per cent THC content.
The advantage of broad-spectrum products is that users will still benefit from The Entourage Effect (to a degree), even though THC isn’t present. This makes broad-spectrum products a great middle of the road option for those who desire the benefits of the full range of phyto compounds without the THC.
Whilst many phytocannabinoids are proving to have their own unique remedying qualities, the presence of all of them is believed to create a phenomenon called The Entourage Effect. First discovered in 1998, researchers observed that phytocannabinoids considered to be inactive alone resulted in increased therapeutic effect when paired with the main phytocannabinoids such as THC and CBD.
The science behind this revolves around synergy, in that it is believed that all of the compounds in the plant work synergistically and harmoniously together, creating a more potent effect than when they are used in isolation.
The Entourage Effect gains conflicting opinions in cannabinopathic care and is still considered by some to remain simply a theory that requires further investigation, but leading experts in cannabis research such as Dr Ethan Russo are confident in the data consistently emerging from studies confirming the existence and importance of The Entourage Effect in cannabinopathetic care.
There are varying methods of extraction across the CBD industry, but the one which is most highly regarded and that it’s recommended you look for when purchasing CBD products is CO2 extraction. Other processes, such as solvent extraction methods like ethanol extraction or those that require high heat, can damage the plant matter and contaminate the final product with undesired substances leftover from the extraction process. At Karma Coast, we use “supercritical” CO2 extraction methods, which ensure that the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids all remain intact, maintaining the highest possible quality of our products.
As important as the process of crafting the products is, when it comes to ensuring quality, the integrity of the product begins whilst the hemp plant is still in the ground. Whilst choosing CBD, it’s important to source companies that use organic hemp, as this will ensure the hemp plant is farmed as naturally as possible and is resultantly free from dangerous pesticides and chemicals that can remain in the plant extract throughout the extraction process, with the possibility of contaminating the final product.
Alongside this, reputable CBD brands will usually offer full transparency with their lab reports, including them in product descriptions so that you can clearly see which cannabinoids and other plant compounds are in the product.
There are many CBD oils on the UK CBD market these days. Just as the amount of information when looking to buy CBD oil can be overwhelming, selecting an item from the thousands out there can be daunting too. This is where the benefit of talking to cannabis professionals about which CBD product to choose comes in.
At Karma Coast, we have a select range of expertly crafted, high-quality, full-spectrum products made from the finest quality organic hemp (industrial hemp), ranging from CBD vape pens, CBD tinctures and CBD oils, CBD balms, topicals and more.
